Respiratory System

How many times do you find yourself standing in your classroom taking a calming deep breath? If you're like many others, it occurs at least once a day. Being a teacher is a challenging job, to be sure. It's also quite rewarding.

But, of course, our lungs do more than help us calm down during times of stress. They also fill our bodies with oxygen, which is necessary for life. With each breath the air travels down the trachea. As it travels toward your lungs tiny hairs, called cilia, remove any dirt from the air. It then travels through the bronchi and the bronchioles. It's a complex process that produces a very simple, and powerful, result – life.

Teaching about the respiratory system is rewarding because it helps children see how small responses that they take for granted every day work to keep them alive.
