First off, teachers are already asked to give too much of themselves to students. To have to friend a student is another intrusion into my life. I don't friend students, past, present, or future. I don't care how old they are. They need to stay out of my business outside the classroom. I resent how much the public expects of teachers. We are human, we have lives outside of school also. Why do students have to intrude into that as well?

I teach and mentor high school students. My personal rule is that they can "friend" me after they graduate. It's great to find out how they are doing out in the real world!

I have a page for our after school program. It is a great place to keep parents and students informed of events, field trips, classroom needs, and why not post homework. Whether we like it or not, they use these types of communications. might as well make it positive. I do have some concern about personal facebook page friends. You do have to be careful as you cannot control what pics and comments that your friends post! I

Face-to-face communication works best between teacher and student in a world already being dehumanised by Social Media.
