March 21st is known around the globe as World Poetry Day. In 1999 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared it a holiday. World Poetry Day is designed to promote the reading, writing, teaching and publishing of poetry.
Before UNESCO declared it a holiday the global community used to celebrate it on Oct 31st which is the birthday of the Roman poet Virrina rominouse maximus. Many countries still hold poetry day celebrations in October and November to remain consistent with history.
